Take a Look Inside the Return of "Yoga on the Rocks" at Red Rocks Amphitheatre

"Yoga on the Rocks" returned to the fabled Colorado open air venue over the weekend.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre was one of countless concert venues to shutter due to the impact of COVID-19. As those venues continue to toil away in the painstaking process of navigating the convoluted phases of reopening, many, like Red Rocks, are thinking outside the box.

They say that when the air is thin, it makes your heart bigger—a phenomenon that many are desperately seeking in these harrowing times. The fabled Colorado open air venue, which is situated 6,450 feet above sea level, hosted the return of its "Yoga on the Rocks" series over the weekend and invited people to its sprawling property for some much-needed R & R. Those who have attended concerts at Red Rocks can attest that there is nothing quite like it due to its picturesque views and utopian flair, and an exhilarating yoga session in its idyllic backdrop is a one-of-a-kind experience.

Those who want to partake in "Yoga on the Rocks" can purchase tickets here. Passes are only available online since the box office is closed. Sessions take place from 7AM to 8AM and patrons must bring their own yoga mats.

You can check out photos of the revival of "Yoga on the Rocks" below.

Tiësto to Debut VER:WEST Side Project at Tomorrowland Around the World

The Dutch EDM veteran will be premiering his new alias at the digital festival later this month.

After sharing a cryptic teaser and creating social media accounts in its honor last month, Tiësto is finally ready to debut his new side project, VER:WEST. Titled after his last name "Verwest," fans have been eagerly awaiting to hear what the Dutch dance music veteran has in store. Luckily, the wait is almost over as he just announced that the first ever VER:WEST performance will take place at the Tomorrowland Around the World digital festival.

Describing it as a "melodic house" side project, Tiësto spoke about his latest venture in a press release and shared how excited he was to show off a different side of himself.

I would describe VER:WEST as melodic house music. It’s a lot deeper and more chill and a very different energy than Tiësto. I got this opportunity from Tomorrowland to express a different side of me which I’ve never done before. I know they are going to put amazing visuals around it and make it look really different and cool. Expect the unexpected, it’s going to look amazing!

In addition to the debut of VER:WEST, the virtual Tomorrowland Around the World event will feature performances from Martin Garrix, Armin van Buuren, Amelie Lens, David Guetta, and more.

The show kicks off on July 25th and 26th. Tickets to the VR-enabled party are on sale now and can be purchased here

Get Into the Summer Groove With June's New Releases [Playlist]

Get a recap of last month's new releases and music news with our monthly top picks playlist.

Still stuck in quarantine for the foreseeable future, DJs and producers are using the free time to churn out new releases. Last month Armin van Buuren had not one, but three new releases. That includes his most recent melodic house track, "Hollow," and two festival-ready big room tracks, "Boom Boom" and "Tarzan" with Blasterjaxx. After releasing his London Sessions album in May, Tiësto is still dropping new music too. This time he went with a more bouncy house sound in "Tomorrow."

Nora En Pure also has been busy making new songs while she's stuck at home. According to a press release for her first release of the year, "All I Need," fans can expect "a steady stream of new music over the rest of the year."

While spending their downtime with their newborns, sister DJ duo NERVO have also found themselves working on new music, like their latest release "Hurt." When asked about what else they've been up to in EDM.com's "Quarantine Diaries" series, they shared that they actually contracted COVID-19 and thankfully recovered.

Talking about surviving, Flux Pavilion and Feed Me dropped their monster collaboration, "Survive." Unlike their dark bass, the track takes on a more melodic and future bass sound and showcases both artists' versatility with their production techniques.

Flexing his own production skills while in quarantine with multiple remixes, MK put his spin on "Midnight (The Hanging Tree)," a song that already got a rework earlier this year by HOSH and 1979. MK adds a lightness to The Hunger Games' deep and meaningful song with some house beats.

Continuing that light mood, Louis The Child finally released their upbeat debut album, Here Is Now. Filled with previously released songs like "Free," "Every Color," "Little Things," and "Don’t Mind," the record also has some new feel-good tracks, like "La La La (Everything's Okay)," "We Are Here For Now," and "Get Together."

On the topic of albums, last month MYRNE gave us a sneak peak of his forthcoming album Wandering, with "Forbidden Lovers." He told EDM.com that the love song is dedicated to the lovers who are currently separated whether it's because of physical boundaries, societal norms, or laws. Elaborating on its inspiration, MYRNE said, "I got the idea while I was away on tour, enjoying a view of the sky - and asked my partner to send me a picture of the same."

For more awesome future bass, house, big room, progressive house, trap, dubstep, and electronic songs, be sure to check out the rest of our playlist below.

Social Distancing Ignored in 5,000-Person Electronic Concert in Nice, France Over the Weekend

After a large outdoor performance from local DJ The Avener, the mayor of Nice, France will be reviewing how the city handles large events.

Ignoring many of the social distancing guidelines shared by the world's medical community, a large group of people in France gathered for an outdoor concert over the weekend.

While some underground events have been broken up for hosting around 100 people, the concert in the city of Nice attracted over 5,000 people, who gathered to see a performance from hometown artist The Avener. French news station France 3 Provence-Alpes obtained footage of the party, which displayed a packed crowd with few people wearing masks or practicing social distancing.

The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, released a statement on Twitter addressing the event and shared his regrets that mask guidelines were not upheld by attendees.

Yesterday’s event at #Nice06 complied with government guidelines as indicated by the prefecture: counting for compliance with the 5000 gauge, distance guidelines reminded via audio and signage messages and masks highly recommended.

We regret that these instructions have not been sufficiently respected and ask the State to review the decree which governs major events in order to impose the wearing of masks, even outside. At #Nice06, it will now be mandatory for all our events. (Translated from French)

At the time of writing, the results of the aforementioned review on large-scale events have not yet been released, leaving many to wonder what the future of concerts in Nice looks like.

Wooli Debuts New Excision and HALIENE Collaboration at Couch Lands "Virtual Stage" Stream

During the second episode of the prehistoric-themed livestream, Wooli premiered the follow-up to his Excision collaboration "Evolution."

During the second episode of the Couch Lands livestream series, Wooli dropped a brand new collaboration with HALIENE and the event brand's owner himself, Excision. Following its initial tease all the way back in May, fans have been impatiently waiting for the moment they get to hear the new tune.

Taking advantage of the fact that most of the world's headbangers were tuned into last night's stream, the track underwent its world premiere at the digital event. Thankfully, a viewer clipped a segment of the broadcast that featured the new song before sharing it for those who might have missed out.

Fans of Excision and Wooli's 2019 collaborative EP Evolution will feel right at home with the new song. While the video is only about a minute-and-a-half long, the inclusion of ethereal vocals from HALIENE makes the track seem more akin to the duo's "Another Me" with Seven Lions and Dylan Matthew or "Oxygen" with Trivecta and Julianne Hope rather than their bone-crunching bops "Lockdown" or "Evolution" with Sam King

At the time of writing, neither Wooli, Excision, nor HALIENE have announced a release date or title for their upcoming song.

This Nomadic Cowboy Creates EDM from Tumbleweed, Rattlesnakes, and Red Rock Canyons

Drawing soundscapes from red rock canyons, open roads, ghost towns, and more, Tone Ranger is redefining the dance floor.

For producer and multimedia artist Tone Ranger, the dance floor is a connection point between awe-inspiring landscapes and human expression. Drawing soundscapes from red rock canyons, open roads, ghost towns, and ancient archeological sites, his hybrid practice is somewhere between an archeologist, entomologist, and astrologer, amplifying the songs of the land. Working from his "Rolling Studio"—an old camper van—this semi-nomadic maker traverses high altitude deserts, salt flats, and valleys, using EDM as a vehicle to encompass vast sound palettes, ritual, isolated journeying, and community action.

With a background in classical music theory and film scoring and a love of orchestral work, Tone Ranger is as influenced by an expansive global music history (from Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, and Ennio Morricone to Ali Farka Touré) as he is by immersing himself in landscapes, local traditions, and dance floors across the US. Using field recordings to construct beats and build complex, interweaving soundscapes, he developed the practice during a research trip to the Amazon jungle, where he abandoned his camera and sought to map out the topographies of the jungle basin through sound. Listening through the recorder to the amplified jungle and its symphonic cacophony of organized chaos, he sought to make music that channelled the sound design he heard in nature. His Amazon recordings feature on recent releases like "Flow," which samples crickets.

Tone Ranger field-recording

California born, Tone Ranger's obsession with the American Southwest stemmed from childhood trips to New Mexico and mystical portrayals in old movies. Returning from the Amazon, he left California to immerse himself in lands sacred to indigenous North American communities, which were also known for UFO sightings and supernatural encounters in addition to nuclear testing, weapon development, and for luring artists like Georgia O’Keeffe. Acutely aware of the sensitivity around the land and wanting to pay respect to its elders, he first lived in the Navajo Nation and worked on a family farm, learning about indigenous history and contemporary Native life.

Tone Ranger in his "Rolling Studio"

In 2016, Tone Ranger joined the Standing Rock protests to halt the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, living in the camps for months—including time spent in jail—and working with the media team as a sound engineer. He quickly saw the necessity for sharing his skills and equipment, and with collaborator Alex Piechowski-Begay, started a programme for Indigenous Nations called "Sovereign Sounds," teaching how to engineer and produce, and providing equipment in order to facilitate the recording of stories and music. Tone Ranger regularly features Native artists in his music, including violinist Sage Cornelius and flautist Shelley Morningsong, referencing a range of traditions. Above anything, he seeks to have a direct conversation with the land, looking for the essence of the "American Soundscape."

Standing Rock, Sovereign Sounds

After a year of living amongst communities, Tone Ranger began an intense journey of isolated immersion into the epic landscapes of the Four Corners region, traveling between Monument Valley, Moab, Durango, and Mojave Desert. He compiled a vast archive of field recordings, from minute insects scurrying over rocks to wild storms. In a field of Saguaro cacti in Tohono O’odham, he recorded a rattlesnake that became the beat for his single "Saguaro," which also features a recording of the Gila River that is used as white noise throughout the track. A horse called Mágico, who he met during an artist residency on a farm in Northern New Mexico, also features on multiple tracks.

"Rolling Studio," Valley of the Gods

Using Santa Fe as a satellite to pivot from, Tone Ranger found himself surrounded by likeminded artists drawn to the Southwest for its feeling of creative possibility. Here a community of EDM producers are channeling a spirit of optimism catalyzed by Meow Wolf, a large-scale immersive installation in Santa Fe that attracts over a million annual visitors and is home to one of the most exciting music venues in the US.

Started by a group of expats from major cities and Santa Fe locals, Meow Wolf began as an anarchistic artist collective taking over empty buildings and putting on multi-sensory exhibitions and music events. Over the course of a decade, Meow Wolf’s "House of Eternal Return" has become the main attraction of Sante Fe. Backed by Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin, the psychedelic, otherworldly music venue has hosted world-class acts like ZHU, Lykke Li, Claude VonStroke, Justin Martin, CocoRosie, and Flying Lotus' 3D show.

"House of Eternal Returns," Meow Wolf stage

Tone Ranger quickly emerged as a regular on the Meow Wolf stage and rapidly became one of the most in-demand EDM acts in the region with a fast growing reputation for his lively performances and irresistible euphoric music—a fusion of Americana and classic house. Always seeking to push the boundaries, Tone Ranger has used time in lockdown to dive further into the visual side of his work, performing to online audiences and livestreaming from old movie theatres framed by his films, which weave psychedelic imagery with contemporary dance and archival footage. He now kicks off a new series of live events at desert drive-ins in secret locations on the outskirts of Santa Fe.

Tone Ranger is also about to unveil a mammoth project titled Peaks & Valleys, a double-volume collection bringing together years of work, field recordings, and journeys into the wilderness. Peaks & Valleys manifests as performances, films, visual artworks, and recorded stories as well as EDM soon-to-be classics. He recently dropped two infectious new singles, "House Made of Sun" and "Don’t Let Go," the former of which channels a pulsing sun energy made with hand drums, whistling, and lap steel guitar while the latter is a swirling, mesmeric summer anthem for open air dancing and stargazing. His upcoming single features Americana singer Parker Ainsworth.

Tone Ranger rises from the landscape as one of the most exciting artists emerging out of the American Southwest, bringing a hypnotic and fresh sound that is guaranteed to entrance listeners. Pushing the boundaries of genre and presentation in his quest to awaken people to the importance of the land, his journey resonates with artists globally who are trying to shift humanity’s relationship to the natural world.

You can dive into the work of the extraordinary Tone Ranger on Spotify and follow his journey here.

GATTÜSO and Laidback Luke's "Heart On My Sleeve" Music Video Burns Bright [Premiere]

GATTÜSO and Laidback Luke's nostalgic single soundtracks a flurry of fire twirling in the new "Heart on My Sleeve" video.

GATTÜSO and Laidback Luke's progressive anthem "Heart On My Sleeve" bears its true colors in the single's official music video.

At first listen, the summer single had us nostalgic for the progressive house heyday that shaped the dance music festivals of the last decade. "Heart On My Sleeve" has now received a colorful new visual befitting of its carefree sonic spirit. The lyrics from Sara Reeves, "I'm showing off my colors now, I’m pulling all these covers down" resonate more than ever amid a montage of fire twirling and colorful, refracted light.

Set against the backdrop of cavernous desert sands, the video cuts between the harsh desert environment and the familiar scene of a shoreline sunset. Reeves' hook, "I wear my heart on my sleeve, just to know that I'm free," is an anchoring mantra reminding us that the road to self-actualization is filled with great contrast.

Laidback Luke stated he was originally drawn to work with GATTÜSO based on his nostalgic sound, which he likened to old school Alesso meets Swedish House Mafia. Evidently the two producers have gotten along swimmingly in the studio, as GATTÜSO recently revealed that another collaboration between himself and Laidback Luke is already in the works.

Mind Control Meets Midtempo in Lucille Croft's Gripping New Single

A nasty bass tune from the depths of a dystopian dungeon.

Blossoming Australian DJ and producer Lucille Croft has dropped the curtain on her new single "Control," a blistering bass tune that plunges its listeners into a rabbit hole with its haunting motif of mind control.

In something that sounds like it was plucked straight out of a Blade film, "Control" is midtempo mayhem. Croft's own alluring vocals are at the forefront here, moonlighting as a siren song that beckons listeners into a rip-roaring 100BPM drop brimming with electro gravitas. With its metallic sound design and relentless energy, "Control" marries the sonic verve of an industrial Boys Noize tune with the ferocity of a REZZ release to deliver a nasty bass tune from the depths of a dystopian dungeon.

However, what renders "Control" a needle in the midtempo haystack is its forward-thinking second drop. Croft goes a more minimal route, imbuing tension with spacey sound design and eerie yet vicious bass patches, which serve well to bring the track home.

You can listen to the single below and find it on your go-to streaming platform here.

Electronic Music Exhibit Featuring Kraftwerk Set to Open with Enhanced Speaker System

Following the mandatory postponement of "Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers," new investments have been made into the exhibit.

The Design Museum in London is making new investments into its sound system to support the museum's electronic music exhibit, which is set to open at the end of this month. The exhibit, titled "Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers," was originally scheduled to launch in April, but was postponed due to mandatory closures following the onset of COVID-19.

Ahead of its reopening, the museum will be installing a PMC 7.1 surround system based on the company's result6 monitors, which is sure to simulate the experience of a live electronic music show. As long-time PMC users themselves, Kraftwerk was influential in making the decision, insisting the museum adopt the award-winning technology.

Kraftwerk Live

The exhibit features a 3D Kraftwerk show complete with strobes and concert visuals, paying homage to the legendary group, who recently celebrated their 50-year anniversary. The exhibit explores more of electronic music's pioneers, including The Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, and Jean-Michel Jarre as well as the technological improvements that have helped to advance the genre throughout the decades. Over 400 items total will be on display.

"Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers" is currently slated to run from July 31st, 2020 to February 14th, 2021.

Biscits Releases Irresistible New Single "From The Start"

Biscits put his spin on a 2009 MSTRKRFT release, giving it a whole new level of groove.

Biscits has returns to his familiar home of Solotoko and Insomniac Records to drop an enticing new house single, "From The Start."

Biscits sought to put a modern twist on MSTRKRFT and John Legend's piano-driven collaboration "Heartbreaker," which is now more than a decade old. Biscits builds "From The Start" slow as enamored vocals and subtle background risers take the initial spotlight. The track gradually leads up to a chorus of tapered house drums while introducing a twangy pluck bass lead and pitched down vocals. The combination results in what can only be described as an irresistibly groovy, lounge-style drop.

Biscits recently employed "From The Start" to set the tone for his recent Diplo & Friends appearance, unleashing the dance floor starter as the first song of his set. The song has gone on to receive additional airplay on Jax Jones' Beats 1 show as well as support from Solotoko label boss Sonny Fodera

The song has particularly grasped Fodera's interest as the producer already has his own remix of the song in the works. Fodera and Biscits have a long history of collaboration that has yielded multiple singles thus far, including "Vibrate" and "Insane."

Sony Purchases $250 Million Stake In Fortnite Developer Epic Games

Sony and Epic Games are strengthening an already proven partnership.

Sony's latest strategic investment is sure to augment the already flourishing link between the music and gaming industries. The parent company of Sony Music has moved to acquire a $250 million minority stake in Epic Games, makers of the hit video game franchises Fortnite and Borderlands.

The investment will enable the continued pursuit of crossover partnerships that have already begun to shakeup a rapidly shifting digital entertainment landscape. The two companies have already demonstrated record-setting synergy this year. In April, Travis Scott, a member of Sony's Epic Records roster, drew in Fortnite's single largest audience to date with his virtual Fortnite concert, pulling in over 12.3 million concurrent viewers.

Kenichiro Yoshida, President and CEO of Sony, has expressed eagerness to identify new crossover opportunities through the partnership. "Through our investment, we will explore opportunities for further collaboration with Epic to delight and bring value to consumers and the industry at large, not only in games, but also across the rapidly evolving digital entertainment landscape," Yoshida said.

From an entertainment perspective, Sony remains a triple-threat in the music, gaming, and film industries. Moreover, Sony's closer ties to Epic Games could prove advantageous as the company gears up for the start of gaming's next chapter with the release of the Playstation 5. At Epic's current $17 billion valuation, Sony's investment equates to around 1.5% ownership.

Yes, DVRKO did wear a mask the whole interview. We still have no clue who he is.

DVRKO seemingly appeared out of nowhere. The masked producer's first release "This Is How" quickly gained millions of streams. His follow-up release "Lights Up" is following the same success and is a contender for song of the summer. We managed to sit down with the masked producer to discuss his signature sound, studio, and more.

EDM.COM: We love your second single and we previewed it here, “Lights Up.” But we’re also still digging your first single, “This Is How” featuring Sarah De Warren! We see it on Spotify’s Friday Cratediggers and your Spotify streams seem to be gaining pretty quickly and the music video is a hoot! So we have to ask…..Who IS DVRKO?

DVRKO: DVRKO? I was released without bond, I paid in false top lines with borrowed compression and stolen melodies of my own. They can dig through the crates but it’s too deep to find. Printed on a laserdisc that was only available in limited release in the Marshall islands, saturated with Gamma radiation from a war that never happened.

EDM.COM: What’s the story behind the making of this song? What are the lyrics all about?

DVRKO: A sun that never rises, a darkness with a light that may never come, and the cycle of love and relationships that we seek, the abyss is neither. It’s brighter over here, bring sunscreen and a Geiger counter.

EDM.COM: Production-wise, we’re really diggin’ the housey-yet-poppy sound of this song. We’ve heard it on a couple radio stations and mixshows, already. What kind of audience do you have in mind when composing a new song?

DVRKO: I consult the advice of an ordained squirrel. His name is Jerry.

EDM.COM: We see that you’ve just dropped the full remix album for “This Is How,” and there are some pretty cool remixes on there! We especially dig the Tony Arzadon, JAYCEEOH and the Gozzi remixes, good stuff! How did you go about settling on these remixers? It seems from your Instagram takeover of our account on Memorial Day that you have some cool friends (DJs/producers). Were you just slinging remixes to your buddies or was there some rhyme or reason to it?

DVRKO: Regarding the takeover, I staged a fake boat giveaway and targeted known DJs. Those that arrived were locked in the building until the stream was over. Some were provided with a light lunch.

EDM.COM: We’ve read your interview with DJ Times and you have some insanely esoteric (and wildly expensive) kit in your studio! Why go that route with all the super high-end hardware? Do you not think today’s bedroom producers can achieve a similar sound, using out-of-the-box plugins and software DAWs?

DVRKO: I borrow almost all of it from the estate of Michael Jackson and return it before he notices.

EDM.COM: What’s with your mask? You’re obviously not the only EDM artist with a mask or helmet – there’s a bunch of bass-music artists who do just that, and then of course there’s Marshmello, Claptone, Daft Punk, Deadmau5, and so on – why is it necessary to wear a mask? Will you eventually reveal your face and who you are?

DVRKO: My shadow, my darkness. The gaps in the floorboards. Streaks of light that you hear as the lattice hits the ceiling of your aureal. Hear me but never see, as I can’t see him. I can’t show more, they won’t let me. It would be hellacy.

EDM.COM: What else can you tell us about your follow-up single, “Lights Up”?

DVRKO: A deep polarizing unrest, a pandemic new and a civil pandemic long in need of resolve. A backdrop in the true anthem of reform, Lights Up to be part of a signal the world needs. I have so much more for all of you but for now, I hope this helps from the echos.

EDM.COM: You’ve got remixes of “Lights Up” by house music legend Robbie Rivera, Disco Fries and Black Caviar. Can you tell us about these remixes and what made you decide to go with these producers? What was it about their individual sounds that attractive you to them?

DVRKO: I thought they were all apart of a gourmet dinner and didn’t realize I was paying for a reproduction.

EDM.COM: Before we let you go, will EDM fans be able to see you livestreaming anywhere? Where/when?

DVRKO: I will wait patiently as the world mends, as a world recluse awakes from what is wrong, with beautiful aureal light when it is appropriate. I am your secret beautiful friend in every rhythm until I can step on stage. I am next door and a block away silent until then. If you actually want to see me livestream please subscribe to my bathroom cam.

VIZE, Imanbek, and Dieter Bohlen Team Up for "Brother Louie (feat. Leony)"

An amazing combination of talents on a single track.

German duo VIZE and Kazakh producer Imanbek have both experienced a massive 2020 so far, each in their own respective ways.

VIZE have churned out a handful of hits, including house smashes such as "Thank You [Not So Bad]" with Felix Jaehn and "Never Let Me Down" with Tom Gregory, further establishing their name as an EDM mainstay. Imanbek, on the other hand, has seemingly taken over the world overnight with his rework of rapper SAINt JHN’s “Roses,” which has grown into one of the most popular mainstream songs of the year.

The two artists have now teamed up with Modern Talking’s very own Dieter Bohlen to put a forward-thinking spin on duo’s 1986 track "Brother Louie," featuring vocals by Leony. Out via Ultra Music, their collaborative work on "Brother Louie" is a stunning effort—the artists perfectly pay homage to the original while infusing it with fresh production techniques and aesthetics that are bound to resonate with their audiences.

Dominated by an infectious bassline, the single immediately gets into action with the help of Leony's sing-along performance. The young singer's vocals are chopped and twisted in the chorus, making for a minimal and catchy house gem.

South African Artist Shimza Announces First-Ever Livestream from Robben Island on Mandela Day

Proceeds will go to those affected by COVID-19 and Robben Island.

On July 18th, 2020, South African producer Shimza will make history by becoming the first artist to livestream from Robben Island on Mandela Day.

Shimza is a renowned figure in the global dance music scene, championing the afro tech sound while using his platform as a dedicated philanthropist. He will host his annual "One Man Show" event at one of the world's most politically symbolic locations on his nation's most revered holiday as a way to raise funds for those affected by COVID-19 through The Kolisi Foundation, The Nelson Mandela Foundation, The Shimuzic Foundation, and Robben Island itself.

Shimza's aim for the livestream is to help educate the youth on South Africa's rich heritage and the location's historical significance through the medium of music. The young artist hopes to honor the legacy of Nelson Mandela while raising awareness of how far the nation has come since his imprisonment, and how much further the world needs to go in order to reach the mission he preached throughout his life's work.

Located in Table Bay off the coast of Cape Town, the island was used as a fortified prison until 1996 and is the location Mandela served 18 of his 27 years behind bars. It's now both a South African National and UNESCO World Heritage Site, serving as the emblematic backdrop for the triumph of the human spirit, freedom, and democracy in relation to the inhumane Apartheid regime.

Shimza's "One Man Show" livestream will take place on July 18th, 2020 on Mandela Day from 16:00-1800 CEST. To stream and donate, navigate here.

Kygo and Kim Petras Drop Visually Stunning Music Video for "Broken Glass"

"Broken Glass" appeared on Kygo's third studio album "Golden Hour."

Back in May 2020, Kygo dropped his highly-anticipated third studio album Golden Hour, which boasts features from Oh Wonder, Sasha Sloan, Zara Larsson, OneRepublic, and many more. Today, he's released a music video for his infectious collaboration with Kim Petras, "Broken Glass,"

Directed by Griffin Stoddard, the music video for "Broken Glass" portrays the lyrics quite literally, as Kim Petras dances on top of a run-down car while ash rains down from above. As the video progresses, Petras moves from the inside of the car to dancing with chains on top of it, and shots of her behind broken glass can be seen throughout. Overall, the music video takes on a decidedly darker tone than the upbeat pop hit, as shadowy red and blue hues serve as the backdrop in the majority of the video.

KAYTRANADA Joins Forces with Lucky Daye for First Single of 2020, "Look Easy"

KAYTRANADA fans can breathe a sigh of relief after he dropped his first official release since last December's "BUBBA."

KAYTRANADA fans can breathe a sigh of relief after the renowned Haitian-Canadian producer dropped the curtain on his first official release since last December's award-winning album BUBBA.

Teaming up with New Orleans-based singer-songwriter Lucky Daye, KAYTRANADA delivered his typically adroit production, offering up a funky masterstroke that picks up right where he left off after the release of his scintillating sophomore album back in December. Expertly balancing on the wire between nu-disco and R&B, he masterfully melts both genres into a sizzling skillet of hypnotic dance music flanked by the velvety vocal flavors of Lucky Daye.

After the release of BUBBA, KAYTRANADA appeared on Apple Music’s Beats 1 and told Zane Lowe that he had already finished the album's follow-up. As of the time of writing, he has not divulged whether or not "Look Easy" will serve as one of its singles or merely a one-off. You can listen to the track in full below.

LP Giobbi Taps Little Boots for Soothing House Single "Meet Again"

The pair also released a lyric video to accompany the track.

FEMME HOUSE founder LP Giobbi has been teasing her tune with Little Boots, "Meet Again," via livestream for quite some time now. Today, she released the long sought after track via her and SOFI TUKKER's label, Animal Talk.

"Meet Again" is an attention grabber from the get-go. Graceful piano chords glide into a hypnotic house beat, eventually leading to smooth vocals from Little Boots. Malaa Lands First Official Remix of REZZ and Grabbitz's "Someone Else"

This is the first time REZZ has enlisted someone for an official remix.

If "Criminals" wasn't enough Malaa and REZZ action for you, look no further, because they're back at it again.

The mysterious masked Frenchman is here to deliver his fifth release of the year in the form of an official remix for Space Mom and Grabbitz's hit single "Someone Else." The original has earned over 8.7 million streams worldwide since it's release in April, lending to large shoes to fill, especially because this is the first time REZZ has ever released an official remix of one of her tracks. Not one to step away from a challenge, Malaa steals the show, transforming the rock and bass crossover into an infectious four-on-the-floor club adaptation.

The remix sticks with the ominous tone of the original, highlighting Grabbitz's haunting vocals. Malaa then quickly shifts gears, chopping up the sample and adding in a pumping house bassline. Though the drop is lighter than some of his previous works, it still packs the right amount of punch we've come to know and love from the elusive producer.

Electric Zoo Forced to Abandon 2020 Festival After NYC Mayor Cancels Large Events Through September

"We’ve kept hope alive and continued planning and building Electric Zoo until today."

Following the announcement by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio that all large events in the city are to be cancelled through September, famed festival brand Electric Zoo officially pulled the plug on its 2020 event.

Back in February 2020, organizers took to social media to share a pre-sale registration link and announce the 2020 theme, "Supernaturals."

In an official statement shared via the fest's Instagram page, representatives shed some light on the impetus behind their decision. "On July 9th, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced all large events will be canceled ‪through September 30th," the statement reads.‬ "Regrettably, we must stop all the preparations for 2020 Electric Zoo: Supernaturals and reschedule the festival for 2021. We’ve kept hope alive and continued planning and building Electric Zoo until today. While we are heartbroken, everyone's safety is our #1 priority and we understand the Mayor’s decision."

"We are all New York tough, let’s be safe and get through these difficult times together," the post continues before it divulges the festival's rescheduled dates. "We will return Labor Day Weekend 2021 with the Supernaturals theme and with the biggest line-up in the history of Electric Zoo!"

Organizers are honoring refund requests, which can be submitted here. Pass-holders who want to keep their ticket for the 2021 fest will receive a $50 credit on their wristband to use for food, drinks, and merch, and VIP purchasers will receive a $100 credit.

According to New York's governor, Andrew Cuomo, 73,558 tests were performed yesterday, July 10th. 786 of those tests came back positive, which equates to 1.06% of the total tests administered. The number of total hospitalizations fell to 826, but there were 8 deaths.

Seven Lions, Last Heroes, and HALIENE Unveil Massive Collaboration "Don't Wanna Fall"

The triple threat collaboration was previously teased at Seven Lions' "Park 'N Rave" show in Arizona.

Seven Lions has continuously kept fans on their toes since the beginning of 2020, releasing track after track. Last week, he released a remix album for his Find Another Way EP. Just 7 days later, he's teamed up with Last Heroes and HALIENE for another fresh single, "Don't Wanna Fall," out via his Ophelia Records imprint.

"Don't Wanna Fall" is a passionate, energetic offering that fans of Seven Lions, Last Heroes, and HALIENE will find comfortingly familiar. HALIENE's immaculate vocals float atop hollow kicks and crisp claps, eventually leading listeners into a flurry of shimmering synths and rumbling bass that Seven Lions and Last Heroes have cooked up.

The trio has also included a handful of remarkably subtle elements that add another level of refinement to the tune, such as the reverb tails following HALIENE's vocals in some sections and the playful bells in the intro. "Don't Wanna Fall" serves as a culmination of each artist's distinct talents, resulting in a phenomenal addition to each of their discographies. Summer Camp Music Festival Postpones 20th Anniversary Event to 2021

Yet another major festival brand cashes in its chips due to the impact of COVID-19.

Summer Camp Music Festival is the latest major festival brand cashes in its chips due to the impact of COVID-19. The fest's organizers were holding off on postponing as the state of Illinois navigated its reopening process. which was hinging on Phase 5 of the "Restore Illinois Plan." However, due to the recent spike in nationwide cases, they decided to officially pull the plug.

Ian Goldberg, founder of the beloved Chillicothe, Illinois music fest, today announced the official postponement of its 2020 event, which was going to be its 20th anniversary. In a press release, he also shared Summer Camp's rescheduled dates, announcing that the 2021 iteration will take place over Memorial Day Weekend from May 28th to May 30th.

"We have held out with hope against hope that things would begin to get better in this ongoing fight against the novel coronavirus," said Goldberg. "With strong leadership here in Illinois, we have been making progress. All of the metrics have been trending in the right direction, and we were encouraged with the Governor moving up the opening of outdoor patios and restaurant service to Phase 3 and then moving ahead with opening Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois Plan. However, in the face of the national spike we are now experiencing, along with the lack of leadership and coherent response on a national level, it is clear that Illinois will not be in Phase 5 and we will not be able to safely host Summer Camp Music Festival this August."

"As much as it pains us to miss this year, that was to have been our 20th Anniversary celebration, we of course hold the health and safety of you, our fans, and our dedicated staff as our number one concern," the statement continues. "So it is with a heavy heart that we again announce the postponement of our 20th anniversary celebration to Memorial Day Weekend of 2021."

According to the press release, most of the headliners booked for the 2020 festival will appear at next year's event and a full lineup will release soon. Refund requests will be honored starting Monday, July 13th with a deadline of July 31st, 2020, and an email from organizers with more information will arrive in inboxes soon.

Purple Disco Machine Funkifies Duke Dumont's Classic Single "Ocean Drive"

A funky makeover you didn't know you needed.

Duke Dumont has been filling our summer with fresh remixes of tracks from his debut album Duality. The latest remix sees his 2015 hit "Ocean Drive" reworked into a funky house bop courtesy of Purple Disco Machine. The rework arrives after Dumont offered up an acoustic rendition of his catchy tune "Nightcrawler" last week.

Purple Disco Machine's remix of "Ocean Drive" is a groovy ride front to back. The German producer looped and chopped the unforgettable vocals of the original track as well as added plucky synths and a funky bassline to cultivate a nostalgic feel. While maintaining the sincerity of the original, Purple Disco Machine has added the perfect amount of his own personal touch to truly make this version of "Ocean Drive" a must-listen.

Playlisting Tips for a Time When the Dance Party Has Moved Indoors

EDM artists must focus on playlisting more than ever as streaming keeps the industry afloat.

EDM is simultaneously one of the most popular genres of our time and one of the most difficult genres to gain recognition on playlists.

It has partially become synonymous with the wider genre of pop—but why do green and mid-level EDM artists have trouble getting their music placed on these lists?

The pandemic hasn’t had a significant impact on the streaming aspect of EDM music positively or negatively. But what can rising EDM artists be doing during this unique, prolonged moment?

Song Structure

It all starts with a song.

You want to make sure your track is DJ-friendly and therefore, dance-floor-friendly. Enticing your listeners early on is crucial, and while it’s smart to stick to the formula of intro, breakdown, build, and drop, your song might stand out if you mix these sections up in a unique way. You want the element of surprise coupled with the element of accessibility.

According to a recent study, 35.05% of listeners skip songs in the first 30 seconds, meaning you don’t get that (sick!) $0.004 payout, and it hurts you algorithmically. And while the increasingly truncated attention span of listeners is killing indie music, this is not necessarily bad news for EDM artists who tend to not have lengthy intros and whose music is written intentionally for immediate approval and adoption—delayed gratification be damned.

Whether you choose to write a unique, non-formulaic song or you choose to play it a bit safer, it’s important that the energy ebbs and flows in a sonically exciting manner, and that it is attention-grabby within the first 20 to 30 seconds to avoid the dreaded skip. Avoiding anything that can harm you algorithmically is important to maintaining and gaining listeners and for getting you gassed up for bigger playlists and eventually editorial.

Speaking of….

Don’t Count on Editorial

If you examine the percentage of EDM on the most recent New Music Friday lists, it’s not a huge piece of the pie.

In fact, it’s the sliveriest of slivers, averaging at about 0.037%.

According to Chartmetric, there are currently a total of 218,707 playlists that are geared towards EDM/Dance on the platform. 214,117 of those are user-generated.

That being said, it's absolutely prudent to continue to submit to editorial via the artist portal and when you do, be strategic with your efforts. Again, based off the Chartmetric analysis, the top two most followed Spotify workout playlists, "Motivation Mix" and "Workout," are made up of EDM and its sub-genres by the vast majority. Consider submitting to those over the all-too-tempting New Music Friday.

If you’re choosing between a few songs, choose the one that grabs listeners' attention the earliest. The quantity of submissions is overwhelming and you can’t count on Spotify curators to give songs more than a verse-chorus listen, if that. But make sure your energy spent on editorial is commensurate with the likelihood of your music actually getting placed on one of those elusive lists.

Hit Up Timely User-Generated and Branded Playlists

So now that you know there are over 200K user-generated EDM playlists, making up about 98% of the EDM playlists on the platform, what are you going to do about it?

Create a database for yourself of independent playlists and curators—archive their playlist name and link, what genres or moods you notice, and the contact info of the curator. You can first keep your research general—search for and reach out to third-party or user-generated playlists that sonically fit the mood, feel, and genre of your music.

Then pivot to more of a targeted approach by researching brands. EDM is obviously a very popular genre in the fitness world. Expand your database by creating a list of popular fitness brands (ex: SoulCycle, CycleBar, Exhale) and reaching out to their official playlists. If it’s difficult to get through, aim for more local or personal brands.

Moving to even more of a narrowly targeted focus, think about what playlists would be relevant for the current cultural, social, or political moment. For example, during COVID-19, at-home "quarantine workouts" have become increasingly popular. Search these types of playlists and pitch your music to them. Capitalize on the moment.

Let a Promotions Company Do the Work

If you’re thinking, "I’m too focused on writing, performing, managing, and booking myself to worry about playlists," there are plenty of companies that would love to do the heavy lifting for you. Be sure to choose an artist-focused, ethical company that has real relationships with real curators.

Here’s a guide to avoid the scammers.

This unique moment could actually be beneficial for EDM artists.

Be sure to write and produce songs that are unique yet accessible, and grab the listener’s attention early on so you can be algorithmically successful.

Just because EDM isn’t always a priority for Spotify editorial lists, there are plenty of thematically timely, impactful, branded, and user-generated playlists that would love to have you.
