WHIPPED CREAM and REAPER Set New Standard For Bass Collabs in “Shouldn’t”

The two skilled producers united their individual sounds for a track packed with limitless energy.

In many ways, the subgenres of bass music have always had a distinct divide between them. While this has begun to change in recent years, it terms of drum and bass, it’s often confined in its own box. Despite the genre having deep roots and influence in other categories of dance music, few producers have blurred the lines between drum and bass and other bass subgenres. In their new single by the way of Monstercat, Canadian rising star WHIPPED CREAM (real name Caroline Cecil) and the mysterious, masked producer REAPER defy odds and set a new standard for bass collaborations in their new track, “Shouldn’t.’”

Cecil, who has had an immense breakout year and is rapidly on her way to becoming a household name in dance music, shows no sign of stopping her streamline of unexpected, well-executed collaborations anytime soon. The release of “Shouldn’t” comes just under a month after she brought in notorious rapper Lil Xan for “Told Ya.” Over the summer fans also saw a release alongside LICK titled “The Greatest,” as well as a single with 19-year-old goth-pop singer DeathbyRomy, “Time.”

Cecil’s audacious approach to production has not only made its mark on the music industry but has left fans consistently anticipating her next unexpected collaboration to come. When asked about the making of “Shouldn’t,” Cecil had to say:

"REAPER is hands down one of my favorite electronic producers right now. He’s bringing a new special light to a genre I really love - drum and bass. We wanted to make a song that would go off in any venue across the world and we did that with ‘Shouldn’t.’”

Though a seemingly unlikely pair in terms of sound, their attitude in production tells the same story. REAPER’s fluidity goes beyond the boundaries of drum and bass, and can best be described as chaotic, energizing, and downright evil. This type of frenzied energy is what has made REAPER one of the most exciting acts in recent years.

“Shouldn’t” features this crazy dynamic contrast to make listeners feel manic and demented,” he said. “The progression of this song is intentionally irrational and a little unconventional in order to keep you on your toes.”

For fans looking to journey deeper into REAPER’s demented sound, his five-track EP, RAPTURE, was recently released on Monstercat. Cecil has also teased a plethora of music to release throughout 2020.
